Messenger of Fear by Michael Grant

Night had fallen, turning the forest around us into a place of eldritch fears, a fairy-tale forest wherein might lurk witches with interests in gingerbread and plump, flavorful children.

Goodreads Synopsis:

I remembered my name – Mara. But, standing in that ghostly place, faced with the solemn young man in the black coat with silver skulls for buttons, I could recall nothing else about myself.

And then the games began.

The Messenger sees the darkness in young hearts, and the damage it inflicts upon the world. If they go unpunished, he offers the wicked a game. Win, and they can go free. Lose, and they will live out their greatest fear.

But what does any of this have to do with Mara? She is about to find out . . .

I find it very distressing to say I really loved this book. Even with the horribly cruel scenes it included, it was an exceptional read.

It was almost addictive – it got to the point that I really didn’t want to put it down. You long to know what’s going to happen next; how all of these things are connected.

It really had me hooked from the very first page, when our protagonist, Mara, wakes up surrounded in a field of mist.Β Michael Grant really has an amazing way of describing things, and keeping readers coming back for more.

If you don’t mind a bit of gore, scenes of cruelty and violence, and like things that lean on the paranormal side, I recommend this book for you!

I’m hoping to get The Tattooed Heart for Christmas, which is the second book in the series!

You can buy Messenger of Fear from Amazon.
